Mono-ethylene glycol

What is mono ethylene glycol (MEG)?

Mono ethylene glycol (MEG) is a organic liquid chemical compound which molecular formula is represented by C2H6O2. Meanwhile this compound is very simple among the glycol family, it has many importance and applications in various industries. Ethylene glycol is used to produce a variety of products in industry. Ethylene glycol has a significant viscosity And despite that  its sweet smell, it is very toxic. Base on what most of  factories use , know as car antifreeze products on the market . We also had some experiments which we will talk about it in articles to prove that family of ethylene glycol (MEG,TEG,DEG) are suitable choice for antifreeze in vehicles  base on evidences.

What is mono-ethylene glycol (MEG)?

Monoethylene glycol  (MEG) is the simplest combination of glycols, also known as 1 and 2-ethane diol, ethylene alcohol, 1 and 2-dihydroxyethane and hydro carbonic acid. To produce monoethylene glycol , ethylene raw materials are used in industry. In these processes, an intermediate compound of ethylene oxide is formed, which eventually reacts with water to form 1 and 2-ethane diol . These reactions occur in the presence of a catalyst or under alkaline or acidic conditions. The final product is monoethylene glycol, which is produced with a maximum purity of 90%.

Monoethylene glycol is one of the most common organic compounds with antifreeze and antifreeze properties.

Ethylene glycol is used to make polyester resins; It is also a key component of antifreeze formulations.

Applications of monoethylene glycol

  • Used as raw material for the preparation such as polyesters and polyethylene terephthalates of polymers.
  • Application in antifreeze formulations in cars.
  • Application as refrigerat and facilitates heat transfer in air conditioning systems .
  • Factor preventing water freezing inside chillers and cooling equipment in industries . application as dehdrating compound to remove water molecules from natural gas .
  • Use of monoethylene glycol to synthesize some carbonyl organic compounds.applicatioon in rubber industry.
  • Used in the production of polymer resins.
